A recent study found that 66% of the time women asked for less money than men (6% less on average) when seeking a raise or promotion for the exact same role in the same company. Unfortunately, women still are far more likely to undervalue their accomplishments and not ask for pay commensurate with their experience. Even when women do ask, they often don’t have the same success in negotiating a salary increase as their male counterparts. So, what is the solution?
I believe the difference is not whether we ask for a raise but “how” we do it. As women we need to learn “effective” strategies for negotiating our pay. While it certainly should not be our responsibility to make sure that we are paid fairly and treated equitably in the workplace, we must realize that if we don’t take matters into our own hands, we may indeed be waiting a century for pay parity. Consider this…A woman just starting out today stands to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars over the course of her career, undercutting her ability to provide for herself and her family, and ultimately create meaningful wealth for herself.
